Cookies, salsa, breakfast cereal (two kinds!), barbecue sauce, soup, applesauce, hard cider…
and Pumpkin Spice Kale Chips.
That’s it, I’m out.

You know, it’s funny, because every year Americans complain about pumpkin spice everything and I always thought that was silly. In Canada we get a few pumpkin products at this time of year, but not many (although it does seem to be increasing). Then I was in New York state in late September last year, and finally saw what you guys are going on about. Especially at Trader Joe’s, which we don’t have in Canada…I love TJ’s though, and it’s now a must-stop every time I go to visit family in the US.
I can’t lie, though, because I’ve kind of liked the pumpkin spice products I’ve tried. But their ubiquitousness must be very exasperating.
I think the griping has been a little overboard in the past, but this year especially the food industry seems to have cranked up the pumpkin spice dial to — forget 11, more like 30. Fortunately a lot of the products are shelf-stable, so you can ration them out over the course of several months instead of overloading on pumpkin all at once.
I don’t remember seeing anything but pumpkin pie mix as a kid, and then Starbucks introduced their pumpkin spice lattes, and that was it for a while…and then it’s just kind of exploded over the last few years.
