Re-Reading Les Misérables

Thoughts and commentary on Victor Hugo’s masterpiece.

Les Misérables: The BookI first read Les Misérables in high school, back in 1992 or 1993, after discovering the musical. The 2012 movie rekindled my interest, and I re-read it with an entirely new perspective, writing commentary as I went.

Once I’d read the whole book, I started a new project: Watching and reviewing the various movie adaptations (and parodies). Five years later, I read it again in a new translation.

»Commentary on the Book. Start with Part 1: The Bishop! or look through the list. Popular posts include Waterloo, This is the End, and Get to Know Your ABCs.

»Reviews of Adaptations: Movies, comics, parodies, stage. Highlights include the 1978 Perkins/Jordan movie, the 1998 Neeson/Rush movie, the Classics Illustrated comic book, and of course the 2012 film of the musical.

»About the Project: Inspiration, translation choices, paper vs. pixels, Javert’s bridge, one year later and Les Mis at 30.

I used to run a Les Misérables fan site here from 1995 until 2000 when I had to take down most of it. Then in 2013, I wrote some reviews and started commenting on the book at my main blog, K-Squared Ramblings. I’ve since moved all that material over here.
