- Coffee Cartel β β β β β Offbeat local coffee house with atmosphere that makes you want to hang out there.
- Doma Kitchen (Closed) β β β β β Used to be a great Eastern European restaurant. Bounced around the South Bay for most of a decade before closing.
- El Amigo β β β β β Great spot for takeout Mexican food. I particularly like their Chile Relleno. Dine-in, limited parking.
- El Tarasco
β β β β β Small local Mexican fast food chain in the South Bay area. Great for takeout. Lots of outdoor seating at Artesia and Hermosa locations.
- The Empanada Shop
β β β β β Great selection of both meat and veggie fillings, plus desserts (the chocolate one is intense).
- Hopkins Wilderness Park
β β β β β A good place to bring your kids or just take a shady walk in something that feels like nature. Lightly wooded, some hills, trails, a stream and a duck pond, plus picnic areas and camping.
- King Mediterrano
β β β β β Mediterranean/Mexican fusion, right at the 3-way border between Torrance, Lawndale and Redondo Beach. You can get a wrap with shawarma or falafel at a lot of places, but where else can you get a shawarma burrito with mozzarella, jalapeΓ±os and chipotle sauce?
- Lavender & Honey
β β β β β Good coffee, pastries and sandwiches, maybe a bit expensive. They also sell artisan honey and beeswax products.
- Natureba
β β β β β Tiny small business, great smoothies and tropical juices, plus Brazilian-style grilled sandwiches and AΓ§aΓ bowls.
- Neighborhood Grinds (Closed) β β β β β This used to be a great local coffee shop.
- Redondough (bakery/cafe)
β β β β β Bakery with coffee, tea and sandwiches. I usually get one of their cream cheese and fruit-filled croissants. Breakfast sandwiches are also very good.
- Taishi Hainan Chicken β β β β β Variations on chicken and rice, all of them good.
- Two Guns Espresso
β β β β β Serious coffee. Small chain in LAβs South Bay that introduced the Flat White to the region in the early 2010s.

- The Essentials
When I took this photo back in 2016, it was a combination coffee/Chinese food restaurant: they sold coffee in the mornings and Chinese food for lunch and dinner. The owner had previously run a separate coffee shop (The Bean Counter, IIRC) in the same shopping center, then combined the two businesses to save on rent. [β¦]
- Last Walk Along the Coast Before the Virus (No, Not That One)
Last weekend, before the flu hit me, I tried to de-stress by going somewhere for a photo-and-nature walk. I ended up at the actual Redondo Beach, south of the pier. Partly because there was nowhere to park near the pier due to the Kite Festival, which now that I think of it may have been [β¦]
- Glass, Steel, Rails and Wildflowers: A Walk in Manhattan Beach
Lately whenever I take my car in for maintenance, I end up taking the car-free morning away from home as an excuse to walk down to the Manhattan Beach Pier. The last time was right after a Halloween storm, which was gorgeous, but this time it was a gloomy morning, and I took the opportunity [β¦]
- Constructed Wilderness: A Tale of Two Parks
Madrona Marsh Preserve and Hopkins Wilderness Park take opposite approaches to being islands of nature in the middle of the city.
- Contrast: Whales at the Power Plant
Yes, thatβs a Wyland whale mural on the side of a power plant. This plant in Redondo Beach, California is set to be decommissioned when new environmental protections go into effect, and the city and plant owner have been debating* the future of the site. *To put it mildly! The only books left from the Wheel of Time back catalog at the end of the sale were the three you might expect people to leave on the shelf.
- Land and Ocean Sunset (Geography Geekery)
The ocean sunset looked like the sun was setting behind a line of distant mountains. But was it possible, with only the sea to the west?
